My name is Scott Barton. Thank you for visiting my site! By reviewing my materials it is my hope you will gain a clear view of my professional experience, philosophy of music education, musicianship skills, and passion for teaching.
I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education (03) and a Masters of Music degree in Conducting (08) from The Pennsylvania State University. Taking time between the degrees to teach in the secondary setting following my undergraduate degree confirmed that I had chosen the correct career path. Upon acceptance into the graduate degree program, I was awarded a choral teaching assistantship during both years of study. I hold valid state licensure for K-12 Music Education in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and California and have 15 years of successful teaching experience at the secondary and collegiate levels. Throughout my career I have held positions in public, private, and charter school educational institutions. This has afforded me unique perspectives and experiences both in and out of the classroom. During my 8 year tenure as Director of Choirs, Liturgical Music Coordinator and Musical Theater Director/Conductor at Moreau Catholic High School in Hayward, California, I refined my teaching and conducting abilities and developed one of the most active and competitive school vocal music programs in the San Francisco Bay area. My former vocal students have been accepted into world class collegiate music programs, are performing on Broadway and teaching in K-12 music classrooms throughout the United States. Along with my classroom experience, I have participated as a singer and board member of local community and semi-professional choirs. My involvement in these groups has provided me with musical growth and technical training which I continue to share with students in the choral and private studio setting. I am happy to discuss my knowledge of repertoire in genres of musical theater, art song, and choral music and feel that my interpretations and commitment to the highest ideals of music performance are notable.
Recently, I have experienced an unfortunate break in classroom teaching due to a period of documented long term disability stemming from side effects caused by treatment of laryngeal cancer. I am overjoyed to have recovered from my illness with full voice and am extremely enthusiastic about returning to the classroom and ensemble leadership. During my period of disability and while on professional vocal rest, I dramatically developed my keyboard performance and accompanying abilities. This devoted practice time has refined my musicianship in thrilling ways. The piano skills I have gained have developed a more comprehensive understanding of music theory and will surely benefit my teaching of general musicianship. I am happy to share my returned vocal and newly developed piano performance and teaching abilities with you upon request. As a music educator and conductor, my primary goal is to foster well rounded experiences for students and audiences through the art of choral and vocal performance thereby creating lifelong musicians who are able to reflect and grow on our shared musical experiences for many years to come.
